Unearth, Inquire, Conserve and Champion

We showcase sustainable food production in a traditional Lake District farming system; conservation strategies that demonstrate a farming led nature recovery and increase in resilience of nature to the impact of climate change; and historic skills such as spinning, weaving and felting with wool as a way to add value and reduce waste proving that farming can be a viable livelihood with the right infrastructure and support.

Create memories & plan your next adventure

Fascinating destinations, thrilling adventures, amazing scenary, cultural highlights, food, drink and much, much more… There is no denying that the Lake District truly is a national treasure.

When you choose to stay at Cragg House Farm, in the heart of Buttermere, you will find yourself spoilt for choice on what to add to your itinerary. Without needing to move your car from the farm yard you can experience what it is like to be a Lake District Shepherd with our sheepdogs by your side; picnic with our goats; visit numerous mountain summits on foot; experience the extreme mountain bike terrain of the infamous ‘Four Passes’ route or cruise along scenic gravel trails; paddleboard or wild swim in Crummock or Buttermere and then finish your day in one of the local pubs sampling great local food and ale.

Improve your relationship with wild places

We aim to inspire the next generation of farmers, whilst pro-actively maintaining and enhancing existing habitats and natural features. Our experience and passion for breeding quality livestock is invested into preserving the outstanding hefted Herdwick flock.

Our programme of activities explore the issues of sustainability and encourage the wider community to, in the words of the John Muir Trust: ‘discover, explore, conserve and share’ a wild place within a traditional agricultural setting. People are inspired to engage and advocate, evidencing the benefits of enterprises like ours to society.
