Our Oxford Sandy & Blacks
Here at Cragg House Farm, we are proud champions for pedigree native breeds of livestock. Native breeds have characteristics that are better suited to our challenging climate and make a positive contribution to the ecosystem they have evolved to thrive in.
The Oxford Sandy and Black is a rare traditional breed of pig. It is increasing in popularity from virtual extinction twenty years ago. The breed is noted for its many qualities, particularly its excellent temperament and mothering abilities - one of the main reasons we were so drawn to the breed. They produce meat of very high quality and flavour (the markings do not go through to the meat) and finish quicker than many traditional breeds whilst also being less inclined to run to fat.
The Oxford Sandy and Black features on the RBST ‘At Risk’ register due to low numbers of breeding females. We are proud to join a dedicated group of breeders (The Oxford Sandy & Black Foundation Charity) to help play our part in ensuring this lovely breed avoids becoming extinct.
